Fun at the DOH

Just thought I'd let you know about some of the interesting things that I've been up to at work. Monday morning we were informed that we had a bomb scare on one of our bridges. A resident had noticed some wires hanging from one of our bridges that is small and really rusted. They called it in to the State Police and since there is a coal mine just beyond the bridge that is threatening to shut down they entertained the idea that an angry worker could have motive to place it. So the bomb squad came to disarm what they thought was a blasting cap. If they would have called us at the Division of Highways they would have quickly found out it was a sensor from a research project that West Virginia University is conducting. I was out with them last year when they installed it and began collecting data. Since then the local news has reported the story and then had to recount and say that is was just a sensor. We are causing all kinds of commotion!

Today was especially interesting because one of our Truss Bridges was hit last night with a truck hauling large tires. My boss was called out just before midnight to assess the damage and we went out with the crew to do measurements this morning. The state police was called out because the culprit lost one of his tires and then it was hit by another car. The tire is 8' 8" in diameter! You can see below the amount of damage that was done. That cross member over the roadway is supposed to be straight...
